Russell Avdek (Uppsala) will talk in the geometry seminar at 2pm in the Salle des Profs on 14/02/2023. Russell’s title is “Holomorphic curves near convex hypersurfaces” and his abstract is below.
I’ll talk about convex hypersurfaces H in contact manifolds, focusing on the case dim(H) = 4. Every H can be represented by a relation between products of positive Dehn twists on a surface, so it’s easy to describe examples by drawing pictures. A major open problem is to determine when H has a neighborhood which is tight (in the sense of Borman-Eliashberg-Murphy). I’ll describe how tightness can be inferred by studying holomorphic curves and work out some examples, such as for the lantern relation.
